Bad Things….Good Stories

Ok, so this will be a different kind of post for me as I am not sure what direction this will take. I simply have a thought and will attempt to type out my thoughts to see if they make sense. And seriously, I am looking for feedback as I am great believer in conversations and hearing opinions, advice, etc that others have.

Bad things happen everyday. They happen to bad people, good people, messed up people and people who seem to have everything together. Why do they happen? Sometimes they happen because of our own stupidity’ Sometimes were in the wrong place at the wrong time or maybe we were born with it – genetics can be cruel sometimes. Bottom line is this as far as I can tell – I don’t know why they happen, they just do. But likewise, good things also happen for no apparent reason. Why? I don’t know.

I do have an observation, which goes something like this: it seems that whenever somebody tells me about a bad thing that has happened or they find themselves in a bad situation; that the focus always seems to be on the WHY? Don’t get me wrong, as I know in some instances, it is good for us to understand why something happened to avoid making the same mistakes over and over. I just think in most cases we tend to focus on the why way too much.

The focus to me needs to be on the story or lesson if you will, that I am to learn because of this circumstance. See, I believe that God allows us to experience life in all it’s joys, heartaches, celebrations and sorrows so that we are able to share with others our experiences. Ever had this thought: “I wish I had somebody to talk to about this”? I’m convinced there is somebody out there who can understand the “this” and help us through, if we are willing to seek the help. Likewise, we need to be willing to share our experiences, both good and bad. Why? Aren’t we suppose to?

Example of this: someone comes to me and says that they are thinking of getting married but they are just not sure because they have 2 kids from a previous marriage and the person they want to marry has 1 and they’re just not sure how to make it work. I can’t even begin to relate to this but I do know a couple of families that have had great success in making a blended family work. So now I’m able to put these folks together. Make sense? I think so, but hey, let me know your thoughts.

Let’s see…how to type this…….there is a verse that is quoted all the time, Romans 8:28 “and we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose”. Best I can tell, that is a promise! One that we need to claim in all circumstances!! 2 things that hit me about the verse as I typed it out – 1. God works good for THOSE who LOVE HIM. Do you love God? If so, then he is working ALL things for your good. 2. the last 2 words say for HIS PURPOSE…not ours.

Why? God is working all things according to HIS purpose. That is why things happen….good and bad. So whatever your circumstance is, the why has been answered… our question could be, should be maybe….God, what is your purpose for this circumstance? and what can I do to help fulfill that purpose? Somewhere in there, I believe part of the answer is to share our stories with one another. Sharing lifes ups and downs makes us stronger!

I pray that each of us, no matter our circumstance, our able to see God’s hand at work in our lives and that we will be faithful to trust Him and seek His Purpose for our lives.

Blessings,
